Lyrics derived from Charles Tindley's gospel song "I'll Overcome Some Day" (1900), and opening and closing melody from the 19th-century spiritual "No More Auction Block for Me" (a song that dates to before the Civil War). According to Professor Donnell King of Pellissippi State Technical Community College (in Knoxville, Tenn.), "We Shall Overcome" was adapted from these gospel songs.

THE OCEAN WAVES OF GRIEF: with refrain "It is well with my soul." / With my soul forever Fresh grief crashed upon me like relentless ocean waves with constant towering breakers all around. With deep loss so new, it did not feel quite true to then say, "It is well with my soul." (SKIP REFRAIN) As time has passed, waves of grief still come and crash over me as before, but some waves are smaller, spaced farther apart -- I'm still longing to fervently say... REFRAIN: It is well [it is well] ... with my soul [with my soul] it is well, it is well with my soul. Much time has gone by now, most waves of grief are gentle -- though a breaker still overwhelms from time to time. I feel God's love surround me, deep caring all around, I can now with all honesty say... REFRAIN: It is well [it is well] ... with my soul [with my soul] it is well, it is well with my soul. The lyrics are from words of wisdom shared by my dear friend Valerie, expressing her journey of grief after their twin daughters sadly passed away. Valerie also wanted to share that over the years, they have had the joy of welcoming three healthy sons into their family, and that they are very grateful for God's presence, comfort, and strength throughout the years. Their prayers sustained them greatly. When our newborn grandson died shortly after his birth, I found great comfort in Valerie's words of empathy, hope, and relying on God. Thank you so much, Val! Spafford, Gospel Hymns, No. 2, 1876, alt.

Beneath every behavior, there is a feeling. and beneath every feeling there is need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom. (Sung twice.)
